Jenifer’s Lap-Band Success Story

Lost 65 pounds

I had the surgery after 20 years of going to doctors, nutritionists, or whoever would give me the “popular” stomach diagnosis of the moment. Professionals would take me off of certain foods because everything irritated me. Yet, I was still always holding on to so much weight and feeling miserable all of the time. I was poked and prodded and I had had ENOUGH!!

After 2 years of doing “undercover” research, trying to accept that a LAP-BAND would not unbalance my body, I finally decided to come out about my thoughts and decisions. My family fought the good fight at trying to get me not to go the surgical route, but I was going to proceed with my plans.

I had a friend who went to Mexico for banding and that did not seem like the option for me. I needed a holistic approach, a support team, in case my family never accepted my decision. The Internet had SO many quick fixes and people willing to do a LAP-BAND surgery guaranteeing my success. I remember contacting Day One Health on the internet and the next day, a packet of information came along with a phone call from my “advocate.” She answered every question I asked and understood me to the core. She knew that this decision could be one of the most difficult for me to make, but could also be the best decision I would ever make for myself. She was patient and honest with me that I had to make the band a success for myself! Day One could provide the tool but I had to do the work!

From that moment, I knew Day One Health was for me! On August 21, 2008, I had my LAP-BAND surgery. The advocates greeted me when I arrived and were there when the surgery was over. My reluctant parents were guided through the process and started to accept what they had to do for me to assist in my success. They called me at home and continued to support me until, well I guess, FOREVER!

I remember when I could eat solid food about a month after surgery and asked my advocate for a diet plan and she told me to eat like a normal person. This still causes me anxiety because I have never had the luxury of being that so-called normal person. I think it is a bit strange and nice that friends who have known me for years say that I eat more normal now than I ever had before. The LAP-BAND gave me the opportunity to feel good about me and see what I had been working towards since I was a kid. Now, I work out 3 to 4 days a week and food does not irritate my insides like it did for so long. I can still go out to eat, but many of the eating rules and habits I had learned growing up had to be reworked to fit my new lifestyle. Thank goodness for to-go boxes and friends who like to split food with me! I am still scared of food and have to remind myself that I can be a normal person and enjoy food — I just have to listen to my body about how much and how quickly I can eat.

Day One Health and their amazing support team have been the backbone and core of my team, of my family! They guide me through my anxiety, my questions, and my day-to-day life. If it were not for the amazing staff and advocates I do not know if I would have been such a success! Thank you DayOne Health! I owe so much to you and know you will be in my life forever!
