So, you are thinking about having the LAP-BAND Surgery? I am sure you have heard about the possibility of the pre-operative liquid diet prior to surgery. Our surgeons here at the DayOne Health Weight Loss Surgery Center in Chicago, recommend each and every one of our patients complete a 14 day liquid diet prior to their surgery. The reason for the pre-op liquid diet is to help shrink your liver. Your liver and stomach are close together so making your liver nice and thin will allow your surgeon better access to place the band around your stomach. When you follow a calorie restricted, low sugar, liquid diet, your liver will shrink enough to allow for a safer and quicker surgery.
The liquid diet is a lot easier than it seems, you just need to prep yourself and get the necessary items prior to starting your liquid diet. You can start to wean yourself off solid foods and onto liquids slowly before the beginning of your 14 day liquid diet. That way your body will adjust better to a full liquid diet by taking it slowly. You will be consuming clear liquids all day long- these clear liquids include things like crystal light, diet Snapple, broth, Jell-O, Italian Ice, Popsicles and unsweetened iced tea. For your three meals during the day, you are able to consume full liquids. These are liquids which will provide you with more calories and protein than the clear liquids. You can consume low fat strained creamed soup, low carb protein drinks, milk and drinkable yogurts. It is very important to make sure you are consuming 64 oz of fluids per day to help you maintain a feeling of fullness. The staff at DayOne Health is always there to help you along the way and provide you with information prior to your surgery.
