StomaphyX®

What is the StomaphyX procedure?

DayOne Health Chicago Bariatric Center strives to offer the safest and most effective procedures for our patients. As a leading weight loss outpatient facility, we are excited to be one of the first clinics in US to offer new , minimally invasive weight loss procedure. The StomaphyX procedure is an innovative revision procedure for individuals who have had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery and have regained weight due to a stretched stomach pouch or enlarged stomach outlet. Approved by the US FDA in 2007, the StomaphyX procedure reduces the stomach pouch and stomach outlet (stoma) to the original gastric bypass size without traditional surgery or incisions, and with minimal recovery time.

What is the procedure like?

Performed safely, quickly, and with minimal patient downtime, the StomaphyX procedure is performed without any incisions to the body. First, the patient is put under general anesthesia. Next, the StomaphyX device is introduced through the mouth and into the stomach. Once inside the stomach pouch, sections of stomach tissue fastened with the StomaphyX device creating pleats that, in effect, make the pouch smaller and create restriction.

The final number folds depends on patient’s anatomy. The advantages of incisionless surgery over laparoscopic, or open surgery, include a shorter hospital stay, reduced patient discomfort, shortened patient recovery, no visible scars, and typically higher patient satisfaction.

How long does the procedure take?

Most procedures are complete in 20-30 minutes.

How safe is the StomaphyX procedure?

StomaphyX has been shown to be safe in hundreds of procedures worldwide. To date, side effects have been minimal and transient. The StomaphyX procedure is safer than traditional surgery which involves incisions in the skin for access to the organs, and cutting around the organs to free the desired area for suturing. With StomaphyX, there are no incisions inside on the organs or outside on the skin. This reduces or eliminates the risk of incisional herniation, infection, adhesions or visible scarring. StomaphyX procedures are particularly attractive replacements for revisional surgery because revisional surgery is among the most complex and dangerous types of surgery.

What can I expect after treatment?

Most patients can return to work the next day or within a few days following their StomaphyX procedure. You should expect to experience some discomfort in your chest, nose and/or throat for the first few days to a week after your procedure. You will be asked to restrict physical activity for the first week and will be given dietary guidelines to help you maximize your success while your plications heal.

What is my diet after the procedure?

In order to allow the pleats to bond to each other, patients are put on a liquid diet for two weeks. The first week consists of a high-protein clear liquid diet, the second week consists of a high-protein full liquid diet, the third week consists of a mushy regular diet, then back to solids.
