You will
lose weight with the Lap-Band if you follow the guidelines and
recommendations of our medical and nutritional team. But exactly how
much weight you will lose is largely determined by how well you
follow-up with adjustments along with the lifestyle changes you are
able to make after your surgery. Healthier food choices and an exercise
program can significantly improve your weight loss results.
At
DayOne our entire team is dedicated to supporting you in making the
right nutritional choices, starting an exercise program and determining
when it's time for a band adjustment. With your commitment, and our
support, you will succeed.
First Year Expectations
Most
patients find they lose between 5-10 pounds a month, depending on their
individual diet and exercise regimens. A weight loss of 2-3 pounds a
week during the first year after the procedure is possible, but one
pound a week is more likely.
The result is that, on average,
patients lose about 50% of their excess weight within the first year
following surgery. That means if you are 100 pounds overweight at the
time of the procedure, you will likely have lost at least 50 pounds
after one year. Some people experience even more dramatic results.
Better Health
The
Lap-Band procedure isn't only about losing pounds - it's also about
improving your overall health. Along with losing weight, most patients
find that their related medical problems, such as diabetes, sleep
apnea, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and high blood pressure, improve
or even disappear completely after the Lap-Band procedure.
In
fact, medical researchers have reported that Lap-Band surgery
dramatically improved the health of seriously obese people with Type 2
diabetes. In a study involving obese diabetic patients, 64% had
complete remission of their diabetes a year following the surgery and
26% had "major improvement" in their control of blood sugar levels. The
surgery also resulted in improved blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep
patterns, depression and overall quality of life.
